S.O.S. - Shit On A Shingle - $10 Budget Meal Series

Yum

Ingredients
  • 1.5 lbs - 80/20 Ground Beef
  • 1/2 Gallon - Whole Milk
  • 1 - Yellow Onion (Diced)
  • 1/4 Cup - Flour
  • 1-2 tsp - Worcestershire Sauce
  • Salt and Pepper to taste
  • Loaf white bread
Directions
  • In a large skillet over medium high heat brown the ground beef.
  • Do not drain unless there's excess grease.
  • Add diced onion and cook 2-3 minutes, or until softened.
  • Mix in flour until it's absorbed and cook 1-2 minutes to cook the rawness from the flour.
  • Stir in the milk, add Worcestershire, salt and pepper to taste.
  • Bring to a simmer until thickened, approximately 10 minutes.
  • Serve over toasted white bread.
Enjoy!

  1. This is a childhood comfort food favorite of mine. Daddy always made it with ground beef and over toast too, never dried or chipped beef over biscuits. I like your addition of onions.

  2. 1/2 gallon of milk was WAY too much. Was that a typo?

  3. No, the point of this recipe is to stretch $10 for people on a budget and to make as much food as possible for that amount. Curious why you think it's WAY too much?

  6. Delicious! This recipe is the legit S.O.S. served in every military base my dad was stationed at. He would take me every Saturday for breakfast and this would alway be served on toast with hash browns. If you’re looking for chipped beef & gravy, keep looking. Substituting cornstarch for flour produces the wrong consistency for this gravy.
