Hi Steve, sorry it took so long to reply. The only modification I did was buy another charcoal grate and put it on top of the stock grate. This creates a 'cross hatch' (smaller holes) so the little pieces of coal do not fall through. You can also use expanded metal if you have a good source, just ensure it's not galvanized.

Looks awesome. Did you modify the lower grate on your grill so the lump charcoal does not fall through?
